#XMPP (aka #Jabber) is an easy, widely used free federated chat system.

There are thousands of instances to sign up at, such as https://chinwag.im and
https://www.xmpp.jp

There are also *lots* of apps.

Maybe the most important thing is that an app supports OMEMO privacy:

https://omemo.top

Some recommended OMEMO-compatible apps:

Conversations (Android)
https://conversations.im

Gajim (Win/Linux)
https://gajim.org

Monal (iOS/Mac)
https://monal.im

#Alternatives

Good timing. Had a project group meeting on Discord and now it's down, hope we can get this setup

Last time I have been testing #Monal on #iOS the claimed OMEMO support was absolutely broken, I'd still recommend #ChatSecure over Monal. Has this situation been improved?

I'm not sure, but ChatSecure is listed as not being OMEMO compatible yet?

https://omemo.top/

https://github.com/ChatSecure/ChatSecure-iOS/issues/376

At least from my personal experience #OMEMO in #ChatSecure worked much better than in #Monal (even though ChatSecure has major flaws as well).

Not sure what to do in this situation...

If I recommend ChatSecure people will complain it isn't fully OMEMO compatible, if I recommend Monal as you point out it has its own problems.

But if I don't recommend either, people will ask what they can run on iOS and Mac.

😕

I wish XMPP wasn't such a mess. Starting to wonder if it is even suited to non-tech people.

- from my POV Monal on IOS works well, even with OMEMO. There has been lots of work lately on Monal for IOS, so when you tested it 3 months ago it might be that your issue has been solved in the meantime.

This doesn't mean that there aren't any issues anymore in Monal, but it is usuable and for me it has less battery drain than ChatSecure.
You can as well help with Monal by reporting issues to the author, of course.

Zom is moving to matrix by the way

Thanks for the headsup, there's nothing on the website to indicate this :/

I do believe you

Just meant, there's nothing on their public website (https://zom.im/) to indicate they have abandoned the project.

This isn't very user-friendly of them, to carry on advertising an abandoned project :blobsad:

Just fyi, zom has moved on to using #Matrix for them. So, now there's a new Matrix client, I guess.

What are the advantages of #XMPP compared to #matrix_1_0

True, They didn't updated it on there website although I do received an email from them about it, Telling that they are moving to matrix as it's more feature rich so they will be running Xmpp server for a month after that your data and account will be deleted.

"they will be running Xmpp server for a month after that your data and account will be deleted."

If that's the case, they should be taking down the website now and putting up that statement on its own.

It's not good service for a product aimed at non-tech people.

Yeah, I just had another message about that.

It's weird though because the website (zom.im) says absolutely nothing about this.

If they're aiming at non-tech people, they should be communicating stuff like this more clearly.

They Should, I will create an issue on there Github repo

It seems to be a recent switch. I only found out because of toot from @krille and had to try it myself. It works, but barely. At least, if you have an already existing account with many rooms. Not sure what would happen if you are into few rooms.

Thank you 👍

there is #siskinim (ios) and #beagleim (macos) with #omemo support
#xmpp #alternatives :-)

Adding @kaidan . It is a relatively new, Kirigami based, touch friendly #kde xmpp client.
